We visited Bicester Foodbank to learn more about what they do

We popped into Bicester Foodbank yesterday to learn more about what they do for the local community.

We spoke with the foodbank manager Alison Drake pictured below.

Alison has been manager for Bicester Foodbank since 2021. Alison introduced us to a few of the staff and informed us who founded the foodbank in 2006 Janet Ray. Here is Janet pictured below.

Amazingly we learned that Janet raised a huge quarter of a million pounds for foodbank projects. Bicester FoodBank help support some of the most vulnerable people in the area. Here are photos of their operation at The Beacon on Wesley Lane.

Bicester Foodbank believe no family should have to struggle when it comes to food provision. In 2023 / 2024 they have distributed almost 7000 emergency food parcels to people across Bicester.

When we were at the premises the volunteers were flat out working stocking the shelves’ ensuring food was available for people to pick. Here is Richard pictured below who has been good enough to share his story about how Bicester Foodbank have helped him.

richard

Richard worked in the police force for six years, he also served in the Royal Military. Richard was active and fit however he went through a very difficult season, suffering a heart condition, two strokes and a series of mini strokes. Richard was unable to work after this. Richard found himself living alone and was unable to collect Employment Support Allowance (ESA) because of delays.

Richard had to travel long distances to collect his medications to treat his heart condition leaving money tight, and so tight he could not afford to buy food. However, the Citizens Advice Bureau referred Richard to Bicester Foodbank

When Richard arrived at the foodbank he was put at ease with their volunteers and opened with welcome arms. Richard went on to say,  “The volunteers were fantastic, offering a chat and a shoulder to cry on. I suffer from depression as well and without the foodbank I don’t think I would be here today,” he said.

If you’re someone who is in need because of the cost of living crisis, energy crisis or because like Richard you have certain health conditions going on in your life and are struggling to feed yourself, then pop into Bicester Foodbank who can provide you with food parcels.
